Bombers DII/DIII travel to Kansas City

Coming off strong starts for the season the Bombers DII and DIII side traveled across state to take on the Kansas City Blues in friendly match in Kansas. Both matches were going to be a test to the Bombers as many of the players would be playing on both sides. The Bombers DII took on KC’s strong DI side in the opening match. The Blues scored quick off an early penalty kick to take an 3-0 lead. The Bombers struggled to keep the ball out of their zone as KC continued to advance the ball. A penalty by KC gave the Bombers a points opportunity near mid-field. With a little wind at his back Mark Menne split the uprights from 40 yards away to tie the game at 3-3. Both teams struggled to reach the try zones and the Bombers took the lead with another penalty kick leading 6-3 before half. KC was able to score a couple tries before half and continued into the second half. Playing defense most of the game the Bombers were able to score from Mark Menne to Sean McDonald to Brian Saak for the try. The conversion was not made and the Bomber’s DII side fell to KC with a final score of 35-11. Man of the match went to Alex “Crazy” Ochoa.

Following the first game, the Bomber’s DIII side took on a mixed side of KC Blues and KC Islanders in the second friendly match of the day. Much like the first game the Bombers struggled on offense, but were playing strong defense. The Bombers were able to get the offense going and scored a try by Matt Skarin from Tim Brown. The conversion was made by Matt Skarin. Unfortunately KC went onto victory 31-7 for the final. Even though many of the Bombers played in both games, the score does not reflect the overall effort by the team, especially the new & high school players.

Next week has been 50 years in the making as both sides have League matches and the Bombers celebrate 50 years of being St. Louis’ Premier Rugby Club. The first match is at noon as the DIII side takes on the Royals and then the DII side takes on the Ramblers at 2pm. Both matches are at the Cricket Fields in Forest Park. The Bomber’s Academy will be taking on Lindenwood’s freshmen team under the lights at Lindenwood Friday night at 6:20pm.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the games and the 50th Celebration.
