Tragedy Strikes Bomber Family
Daniel J. "Young Dan" Hartwig

November 4, 1980- July 2, 2004

"Young Dan" Hartwig, age 23, died from injuries suffered in an auto accident July 2, 2004 in Jefferson City, MO. Dan was a star on the rise. He was the starting hooker for the Bombers, was selected to the Western USA Collegiate teams in 2001 and 2002, and started both matches for the Western USA representative team in December in Orlando at the National All Star Championships. The top photo shows an all Bomber front row representing the West with John McBride, "Young Dan" Hartwig (center), and John Tarpoff, Jr. preparing to pack down vs. Mid-Atlantic last December in Orlando.

"Young Dan" had just completed his masters degree in physical therapy from Maryville University with honors. He was doing his internship in Jefferson City and was due to finish July 23, 2004. Dan was sitting in morning rush hour traffic when a tractor trailer struck his car from the rear. He died from massive head injuries. Dan's funeral was attended by an overflow crowd which included his brothers on the Bombers, his friends and family, his girlfriend Sara Crosby, his former school mates and opposing players from all over the western USA. He will never be forgotten.

The Bombers are establishing a rugby scholarship in Dan's name. Those wishing to contribute can send donations to:
