Wolfhounds Run Away Late

Boston, MA - May 10, 2008

The Boston Irish Wolfhounds ran in four tries in the last 15 minutes to defeat the visiting St. Louis Bombers 43-3 in the final week of the Super League regular season. The Bombers were in the match for 65 minutes before the wheels came off as Boston winger Ian Flanagan ran in a hat-trick of tries to seal the win and a playoff spot for his team.

BIW center Aaron Zell opened the scoring at 6 minutes with an overload try. Bomber wing Zach Giljum was denied just short of the line by good Boston defense as St. Louis was putting sustained pressure deep in Wolfhounds territory, thanks to the foot of flyhalf Conail Boyd and strong running from #8 Jason Lamborn. But the defense was solid for Boston, especially in close.

BIW #8 Stephen Prosser scored from turnover ball at 20 minutes, converted by fulback Greg Bruce to go up 12-0. But St. Louis again camped out deep in Boston territory for the remainder of the half, with only a Boyd penalty kick to show for their efforts. The half ended with Boston on top 12-3.

The second half saw St. Louis once again pounding on the Boston line for lengthy periods, but handling errors and solid defense denied the visitors on several occasions. A length of the pitch try from a mishandled clearing kick swung the momentum back to the Wolfhounds as halfback Arthur Delport soccered the ball ahead and outraced the cover defense for a try and a 17-3 lead at 53 minutes.

The backbreaker came when Flanagan scored on a powerful run after some excellent handling to push Boston up 24-3 with 15 minutes remaining. The wheels came off for St. Louis as Flanagan notched two more tries and prop Brian Lemay crashed over in injury time to give BIW the 43-3 victory.
