Bombers Down New York Old Blue

Sportport Stadium, Maryland Heights, MO - April 19, 2008

Justin Mastroianni running hard

The St. Louis Bombers defeated New York Old Blue 23-15 to notch their first Super League victory of the season in a hard-hitting contest at Sportport Stadium. Bomber flyhalf Conail Boyd kicked 8 points and wing TJ Ebner scored a brilliant try and assisted on another to lead the Bombers.

NYOB scored early, starting with flyhalf Ross McClelland's linebreak, then finished off by prop Will Brazier to give his side a 5-0 lead at 4 minutes. Bomber wing Alan Kloss chased down a Conail Boyd wipers kick to even the score at 5-5 at the ten minute mark.

NYOB quickly responded when center Clinton Courtney crashed over to put NYOB up 12-10. But St. Louis answered with the try of the day, as wing TJ Ebner finished off some excellent passing from Boyd and fullback Justin Mastroianni to score center post. Boyd's conversion put St. Louis in front 12-10. NYOB could not capitalize on their wind advantage for the remaining 20 minutes as the sides headed to the changing rooms for halftime.

St. Louis was clinical in the second half- controlling possession and field position as NYOB were only able to cross halfway a few times. Bomber center Brian Meyer finished off a counter-attack as center Simon Moate and Ebner offloaded nicely to assist in the try. Boyd's sideline conversion just missed, but he atoned moments later with a 40 meter drop goal to push his side up 20-10 at the 60 minute mark.

A Boyd penalty kick pushed St. Louis up 23-10. NYOB came to life late, but the Bomber defense was solid. Flanker Jason Lamborn's poach thwarted a promising New York attack, and halfback Kevin Tucker took down big Ben Sadgrove in open field to stop another possible try. NYOB flanker Dillon Buncher crashed over on the last play of the match for a consolation try, but a solid second half performance by St. Louis resulted in a 23-15 victory.

Referee Ed Gardner had his hands full in this ferocious contest as the big forward packs went at each other. But Gardner was up to the challenge and effectively managed the match without abusing his whistle- something both the players and the large crowd in attendance greatly appreciated.

Whites Crush New York

The Bomber Whites raced in 9 tries and defeated Old Blue B 58-22 in the day's final match. The Bomber backline scored all the tries on the back of a strong performance from the forwards. Wing Arnold Sibanda scored a hat-trick of tries to lead the way.

Wing Andrew Bell opened the scoring with an intercept try from midfield. Moments later, halfback Scott Giljum scored a nifty try from a counter attack started by flyhalf Rene Monette. Sibanda then ran in a pair of tries as the backs began to see a surplus of ball. Locks Jason Isaacson and Kingpin Gunnell dominated the lineout and the backrow trio of Brandon Hamburg, Craig Clark and Josh Rainey were strong in support.

Bomber center Joe Mertz ran in two tries and Sibanda notched his third to push the Bomber up 46-8. Center Eric Hinson and fullback Jim Morrison added late tries, as did NYOB to bring the final to 58-22. The Bomber front row players Tom Klepzig, Vinnie Wroughton, Brian Dix and Chris Loftquist set a solid platform up front which provided a feast of possession on the evening. Center Nick Godfrey assisted on nearly every try and had a terrific all-around match.

Bomber Gray 36 Washington University 10

The Bomber Gray (developmental) side started the day off on the right foot for the club, cruising to a 36-10 win over a young and talented Wash U side. Wing Chris Wilson scored a hat-trick of tries to pace his side.

Prop Chris Loftquist scored from a pick and go to open the scoring. Wilson's first try came from a nice assist from fullback Adam Gottemoeller. Center Nick Godfrey carved through on a nice scissors with fellow center Eric Hinson to give his side a 19-5 halftime lead.

Chris Wilson ran in two more tries and lock Ed Reed bulled over for a try to seal the 36-10 victory. Lock Sam Stahnke and flankers Brent Papek and Mike McGowan performed well. Halfback Pat Ryan, hooker Woody Wodicker, center Matt Staed and #8 Matthew Perkins did a great job in their first matches in new positions. Special thanks to Brian Harthill and Phil Reed for filling in to help produce an entertaining curtain-raiser match on a great day to be a Bomber.
