Sportport Stadium Pitch, Maryland Heights, MO - April 12, 2008
The Bomber Whites defeated a very talented St. Louis University team 34-0 on a cold, windy day at Sportport. Bomber wing Marc Dethloff ran in a pair of tries as the forwards produced a surplus of ball for the backs on the day. SLU came out strong and pressured the Bomber line with the wind at their backs. But the defense held in the early going. The Bombers decided to run from deep in their own end, playing into the breeze. Dethloff finished off an 80 meter try after getting a nice assist from center Scott Wozniak to put the Bombers up 7-0 with flyhalf Justin Mastroianni's conversion. Bomber wing Nic Adams scored after a nice build-up from the forwards and nice passing from inside backs Eric Hinson, Wozniak and fullback Pat Ryan. SLU made several breaks deep into Bomber territory, with SLU wing Pat Mitchell looking dangerous on several occassions. But excellent tackling from the Bombers kept SLU from crossing the tryline as the half ended with the Bombers up 12-0. The Bombers came out of the changing rooms with the wind at their backs and wisely used the foot to pin SLU deep in their end- under the direction of captain and halfback Kevin Tucker. Flanker Jim Hoffmann quickly scored from a lineout drive after a nice take from lock Jason Isaacson to push the lead to 17-0. Center Eric Hinson made another line-break, then fed replacement fullback Adam Gottemoeller for a try. Flanker Josh Rainey got in the act next, scoring from an errant SLU lineout and crashing over to put his team up 27-0. Dethloff notched his second try of the day late in the match from more Bomber pressure to close out the scoring in favor of the Bombers 34-0. SLU got strong performances in the forwards from flanker Nnana Awa, who was all over the pitch tackling and supporting. Center Ian Schillebeeckx ran straight and hard all day, and had a good nose for finding a gap. And scrumhalf Scott Mercer displayed his talents with a strong over-all match. Wing Pat Mitchell kept the Bombers on their heels with every touch of the ball. It was no coincidence that Mitchell scored two tries in the day's second match against the Bombers Gray side in a developmental game. Nnana also scored a well deserved try as SLU was too much for the up and coming Bomber youngsters- taking home a 15-0 visctory. Standing out for the Bombers in the developmental match were newcomers lock Bill Hasty and wings Matt Hannan and Matt Staed. Flankers Matthew Perkins and Mike McGowan were strong in the tackle. Halfback Scott Wozniak did an outstanding job with crisp distribution on a windy day. Center Chris Danks made several breaks on the day, and fellow midfielder Woody Wodicker was also strong in the tackle. Fullback Pat Ryan was solid at fullback, making many good decisions under pressure. |
