Sportport Stadium, Maryland Heights, MO - April 5, 2008 Santa Monica ran in four first half tries to race out to a big lead, then survived a furious second-half St. Louis comeback to take home a 31-26 victory and remain undefeated after three rounds of Super League action. The teams scored four tries apiece, but 11 points from the boot of Santa Monica wing Padraig Cremin was the difference. Santa Monica opened with two tries out wide with some elusive running in open play. Fullback Brendon Daniel and wing Kelly Serfoss each scored to put Santa Monica up 12- 0 at 15 minutes. Padraig Cremin kicked two penalties to extend the Santa Monica lead to 18-0 after 20 minutes. Flanker Eddie McKenna added a try at 22 minutes from good support. The Bombers finally got on the scoreboard from a driving lineout as hooker Pat Hess bulled over to cut the score to 23-5 at 35 minutes. But Santa Monica got another try from Serfoss and another Cremin 3-pointer to close the half up 31-5. St. Louis came out firing in the second spell, with better tackling and quicker recycled ball from the rucks. Bomber flyhalf Conail Boyd sliced through the defense at 51 minutes, then converted his own try to tighten the score at 31-12. Wing Justin Mastroianni followed up fullback TJ Ebner's break for a try, and Boyd's conversion closed the gap to 31-19 with 10 minutes remaining. The Bombers struck again as halfback Bryan Lay darted through the Santa Monica defense to score center post and bring his team to 31-26 with little time left on the clock. St. Louis ran the ball from the ensuing kickoff- knowing it may be their last chance, but a dropped pass ruined a promising sequence of play. Referee Simon Page whistled for full-time and Santa Monica escaped with a 31-26 victory. St. Louis blanked Santa Monica in the second half, putting together their finest 40 minutes of the season as they look for something to build upon, standing at 0-3 in RSL play. Santa Monica's #8 Joe Killefer and flanker Eddie McKenna had strong games with ball in hand and in support. Bomber forwards flanker Jason Lamborn and lock Hayden Mexted stood out, as did center Simon Moate. Santa Monica earned 5 competition points with the four try victory, and St. Louis earned 2 points with four tries and the loss by 7 points or less. venue: Sportport Stadium, Maryland Heights, MO referee: Simon Page weather: clear, calm, mid 50s attendance: 400 +- scoring Santa Monica 31: tries: 4: Kelly Serfoss (2), Brendon Daniel, Eddie McKenna. pens: Padraig Cremin (3). cons: Cremin (1).
