The St. Louis Bomber White side travels to Colorado this weekend to square off against the Denver Barbarians in the WRFU D-2 playoffs. The Whites are undefeated on the spring season, with wins over the Chicago Lions, KC Blues and Truman State. The Whites qualified for the playoffs by going undefeated in Missouri divisional play- a league where the Bombers second team faces their opponent's first team, or A side, on a weekly basis. The team is very young- with the vast majority of players in their early twenties. And several are still in their first-ever year of playing the sport. But this common bond has helped in bringing success, as the team makes up with effort what they lack in experience. The forwards are led up front by props Canaan Craig and Tom Klepzig. Reserve props Chris Loftquist and Jahaan Ashfaaq provide solid backup. Hookers Chris Wroughton and Ben Virtue have performed well in set play and in open play, as have locks Jason Isaacson and Sean Gunnell. The loose forwards have been another strength. Zach Giljum, Kyle Manley, Matt Viox and Jim Hoffmann have been all over the pitch and into everything. #8's Sam Stahnke and Josh Rainey provide the power off the back. The backs have used the ball effectively this season. The halfback pair of Kevin Tucker and Scott Wozniak play like flankers, and their distribution skills have dramatically improved. Flyhalves Justin Mastroianni and Jim Morrison have done a good managing the game. Centers Nick Godfrey, Joe Mertz and Nick Adams are very reliable in both attack and defense. Then there is the speed outside: wings Andrew Bell, Marc Dethloff, Adam Gottemoeller, Chris Wilson and Pat Ryan all know how to finish. This team is young, and makes their share of mistakes. But the sign of a good team is how well they recover from their mistakes and deal with adversity. And there's a couple sure things you can always bet on with these guys- they'll give everything they've got and they'll have fun doing it. |
