stlouisbombers.com » the club » news » top story Bombers Blast Boston in Season Finale May 5, 2007 - Maryland Heights, MO The St Louis Bombers ran in six tries on a perfect spring evening at Sportport to down visiting Boston 42-17 in the final regular season match of the 2007 Rugby Super League. The Sportport stadium pitch was in top condition and provided a terrific setting for a fast and entertaining rugby match. St. Louis displayed a well balanced attack with their forwards setting the table for a feast of possession for the backs. Fullback Conail Boyd was once again instrumental in the Bombers' success as he carved up the Boston defense on numerous occassions. Bomber wings Alan Kloss (two tries) and TJ Ebner (two assists) also had strong performances. Boston center Derrick Wavomba ran in a pair of tries to lead his team. St. Louis opened the scoring with a trademark Conail Boyd burst from near midfield to take a 5-0 lead. Veteran Bomber flyhalf Rene Monette added a penalty kick just before wing Alan Kloss scored a powerful try to push St. Louis up 13-0. Bomber flanker Shaun Tegethoff finished off another long break to extend the St. Louis lead to 20-0 midway through the the first half. Boston woke up and began to excert constant pressure on the Bomber's line. Boston center Derrick Wavomba crashed over just before half after some patient work from the forwards to close the half at 20-5 in favor of St. Louis. The second half proved very entertaining as Boston looked like they were going to make a game of it. Rene Monette scored from a TJ Ebner break to push St. Louis up 25-5, but Boston answered with tries from Wavomba and wing Nino Balduzzi to draw to 25-18 with 15 minutes to play. But St. Louis turned up the pressure and dominated play for the remainder of the match. Alan Kloss notched his second try of the night, quickly followed by a try from center Brian Meyer to close out Boston 42-17. The Bomber finished strong with two consecutive wins after a slow start. The large crowd at the final home match filled the spectacular venue and made for quite an event. The Bomber alums in the stands were too numerous to single out, and their continued support is greatly appreciated by the club. The Bombers wish to thank Sportport for use of the venue and hope this mutually beneficial relationship continues to grow. The Goslings Rum "Man of the Match" awards were presented to Conail Boyd of the Bombers and Derrick Wavomba of Boston. Thanks also go out to Fastsigns, Colombos, and Major Brands for their support of the Bombers. The Bombers wish to invite all fans, friends and alums to the "Own the Bar" fundraiser at Colombos next Saturday, May 12 from noon til 10pm. Week 7 The Bomber White side demolished the St. Louis Hornets 48-0 in a MRFU Cup match at Sportport. The Bombers were led by flyhalf Jim Morrison, who scored his team's first try and did a good job managing the match. The Bombers were held scoreless for the first 20 minutes, but one could sense the pressure was going to soon pay off. Morrison's try and conversion put the Bombers on the board 7-0, quickly followed by center Eric Hinson's strong running for a try and a 12-0 lead at halftime. The second spell was all Bombers as the Hornets could simply not keep up with the pace. Halfback Bryan Lay bulled from short range to get things started. Wing Brad Beardon raced in from long range to put the Bombers up 22-0. Forwards Brendan McClarney and JP Shen got in the act with tries of their own to finish off a strong second half and a well-deserved 48-0 victory. The Bombers were strong in the lineouts with Kingpin Gunnell and Josh Rainey snagging everything coming at them. Backrowers Jim Hoffmann, JP Shen, and Kyle Manley were first to arrive at the tackle all day. The victory leaves the Whites undefeated in league play with the maximum of bonus points at the summer break. The fall season will bring the bulk of the cup matches for the Whites, so all players are encouraged to attend trainings this summer at Steger to improve their game.

to join them this summer for touch rugby and 7s at Steger School (701 N. Rock Hill
Road) in Rock Hill from 6-8pm every Tuesday and Thursday.
