Bomber Whites 41 - Hornets 14

Saturday, April 29, 2006

The White side handily defeated the Hornets 41-14 in a MRFU cup match. Bomber #8 Chad Tsitovich led the way with a hat trick of tries as the Whites stung the Hornets 7 tries to 2.

Tsitovich notched his first try from a lineout drive, and then quickly added his second from Scott Giljum's assist. Zach Giljum's conversion gave the Bombers a 12-0 lead on an extremely windy day. The Hornets answered with a converted try to draw within 12-7. But swarming Bomber defense and constant pressure allowed center Justin Mastriaonni to gather a messy Hornets pass and sprint to the line for a try. Giljum's conversion put the Bombers up 19-7 at the break.

The Bombers opened the second stanza with the forwards setting the table for Tsitovich's third try in the 45th minute to push the score to 24-7. Next, wing Jim Crutchfield smashed over from a rehearsed move to extend the lead to 29-7. Flanker Josh Rainey got in the act with another Bomber try to push the scoreline to 34-7. The Hornets added their second try late in the match, but the Bombers had the last say when prop Canaan Craig bulled over for a converted try to bring the final score to 41-14.

Hooker Bill Williams had an excellent day in the set play, and lock Lucas Murillo was a force around the park on both sides of the ball. Center Eric Hinson and flanker Jim Hoffmann led the way in tackling. Halfback Scott Giljum was instrumental in all of his side's tries with quick and proper use of the ball. Veteran forwards John McGuire and Gio Lafata led by example with big workrates.

The Whites face crosstown rivals the Ramblers in next week's curtain raiser match at Sportport at 1pm.
