Whites Sting Hornets

Saturday, May 07, 2005

The White side defeated the St. Louis Hornets for the second time this spring, taking home a 47-33 victory in a MRFU Cup match.

Temperatures soared near the 90 degree mark as the Whites blistered the Hornets with 40 first half points. It took just two minutes for Bomber #8 Zack Giljum to run in the first try. Flanker JP Shen quickly added two more tries with runs splintering the Hornet defense in the centers. Center Jim Hoffman added another try at the 20 minute mark by besting his opposite number and outpacing the remaining Hornet defenders.

The Hornets got their first try at the 25 minute mark through a series of Bomber penalties near their own tryline. Center Eric Hinson quickly restarted the Bomber scoring through some great handling and converted his own try. Hinson's boot was nearly perfect on the day, converting six of the seven Bomber tries. Justin "Minnow" Gillenwater rounded out the first half scoring with a scorching run just before the whistle for a 40-7 halftime lead.

The second half was a bit more interesting as the penalty count against the Bombers began to soar. Captain Corey Gunnell did well to keep his troops disciplined and focused throughout the entire match, particularly in the second half as the squad battled through several interesting decisions from the referee. The Hornets added two tries through hard running and good support to close the gap to 40-21. Bomber flanker Julius Mingala then followed some good work from prop Charlie Milton to dot down near the posts. The Bomber tackling was led by Josh Rainey, Andy Entwistle, Shen and Giljum for the remainder of this stop start affair. The Hornets added two more tries to finish the scoring for a 47-33 final count.

The White side finished a strong spring season with a convincing effort. White side coach Ed Reed added: "The Whites should be pleased with their hard work and the results obtained this season- but should keep fit and ready. Your name could be called at any moment to help the Black side finish the job this season".
