St. Louis Bombers vs. Kansas
Clean sweep of USA CR#2 Central Region

Saturday, April 03, 2004

The St. Louis Bombers competed a clean sweep of the USA CR#2 Central Region by blasting the Kansas Jayhawks 65-6, behind a hat trick of tries from young hooker Dan Hartwig. Hartwig opened the scoring with a 40 meter romp up the middle after his mates in the pack did all the work. Constant pressure on the Jayhawk line produced many chances for the Bombers, who capitalized with tries from scrumhalf Brian Lay, flyhalf Rene Monette and center Brian Meyer to produce a halftime score of 26-6 Bombers.

The second half saw the Bombers open it up and play some real entertaining rugby. Wing Steve Bosse carved up the Jayhawks on a missed kick for touch that ended in a try 70 meters later. Prop Scott "Bowling Ball" Lay and lock Hayden Mexted were men among boys with several thundering runs that left a path of destruction every time they took it up. Both were rewarded with tries that brought the loudest of cheers from the Bomber old boys, who had just defeated the Sunday Morning RFC in the curtain raiser. Captain John McBride also led by example with many punishing runs. Hartwig added two more tries to close the scoring.

Kansas' six points came off the boot, with flyhalf Matt Schwartz playing a very good match with very little possession to work with.

Coach Laszewski was pleased with the performance of his squad: "That was one of our best outings of the spring. We talked about doing the simple things well all week and taking it right at them. We also talked about starting to hit our strides for the upcoming playoffs. We were able to put Kansas on their heels today, which led to some quality ball that the boys used nicely."
