Whites 30 - KC Blues B 28

Saturday, April 22, 2006

The Bomber Whites put in a solid performance in the curtain raiser match, coming away with a well deserved 30-28 victory. The Whites were too much to handle up front, as the front row of Gio Lafata, Bill Williams, Canaan Craig and replacement Chris Loftquist set the tone for the afternoon.

Bomber halfback and captain Scott Giljum opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a try from a messy KC scrum. KC replied with a try of their own, and the conversion gave them a 7-5 halftime lead.

The Whites began the second spell with relentless pressure from the forwards, and were rewarded with a Zach Giljum penalty kick to take the lead 8-7. Replacement center Mike Peurrung, a Desmet alum and current Mizzou flanker, took a scissors from midfield and went the distance for a try to push the Bombers up 15-7. Lock Lucas Murillo added a 40 meter penalty kick to increase the St. Louis lead to 18-7. Wing Kevin Brown's break was followed up by Peurrung who off-loaded to supporting center Jim Crutchfield for the try and a 23-7 lead.

The Blues would answer back with a converted try to draw within 23-14 with ten minutes to play. But Peurrung's intercept try only moments later pushed the score to 30-14 with little time remaining. The Whites seemed to clock out just a bit before the job was finished, as the Blues would fight to the end- adding two converted tries in the late stages to bring the final tally to a respectable 30-28 score in favor of the Bombers.

Bonus Points
The Bombers wish to thank the Mizzou players for reserving in the White side match, and to congratulate their side on a great season. Mizzou lost a close playoff game to defending nation D-2 champs N. Colorado. But the future looks bright for the youthful Mizzou side as most of their starters will be returning next year.

Spotted on the touchline supporting the squad were Bomber legends John Kyle, past club president Brian Dix and Katie, and Tom Ebner. The club wishes to thank the Blues' John Franklin for the refreshments delivered to the Bomber sideline immediately following the final whistle.

The Bombers have two important Super League matches to be played at Sportport the next two weekends. The White side also has Cup matches the next three weekends at Sportport. The club appreciates the support our fans, fans of rugby, and alumni have provided thus far, and would like to continue to see big crowds out to cheer on the home team down the stretch.
