Whites Tangle with Mizzou

In a rare match versus a collegiate side, the Bomber White side defeated a very spirited and talented Mizzou team. Many of the current Bomber White and Black side players can recall their days in a Mizzou jumper. On a cool, blustery day both sides were able to handle the ball well and it only took the Bombers 4 minutes to get first try of the day. Through some nice handling from a quick tap, the Bombers went 70 meters with Eric Hinson dotting down in the corner.

Mizzou came charging after the ensuing kickoff and quickly regained possession only 25 meters from the Bomber tryline. Mizzou spun the ball wide to outside center and captain Matt Sullentrip who chipped over the Bomber defense, raced after the ball and outjumped a Bomber defender to snatch the ball from the air to dot down the best try of the match.

The Bomber forwards picked up their workrate and made the most of a few Mizzou penalties to pound in the next three tries. Two of those tries came from Mizzou alum Zach Giljum for a 24-7 halftime lead. Eric Hinson again opened the Bomber scoring in the second half by scissoring past his opposite number before slicing through several other would-be tacklers to notch his second try of the day. Tom "Streetsweeper" Nardin quickly added another try from the backs before #8 Zach Giljum got his hat trick try against his alma mater.

MU took advantage of a Bomber penalty to quick tap, going 40 meters through some nifty off-loading, finished with shifty run by scrumhalf and Man of the Match Mike Peurrung.

Jim "Monkey" Moyer didn't miss out on the scoring as the Bomber backs moved the ball wide again and Eric Hinson drew several defenders to him to set Monkey loose to do a tightrope act down the touchline while fending off a defender. Monkey again dislocated his finger while dotting down, but Chris Schlereth was there to put Monkey's finger back in place to finish the match.

Mizzou, who didn't let let up for the entire 80 minutes and finished the scoring through wing Sean McDonald, who is on the West Senior Developmental Side's radar. Other notable performers for MU were flyhalf Chris Moyer and # 8 "Dirty" Sanchez. MU was without hooker and captain Ben Virtue whose play was certainly missed.
