More than 100 guests joined the USA 7s team for dinner in Wellington, New Zealand on Wednesday, raising thousands of dollars in support of the Eagle players.

Special guests at the waterfront event included US Ambassador to New Zealand Bill McCormick, New Zealand Rugby Union CEO Steve Tew, and renown rugby commentator Murray Mexted.

The New Zealand 7s team joined attendees for pre-dinner drinks while Australian 7s coach Bill Millard and captain Shawn Mackay were also guests in a show of respect for the American team.

“We had great support from the US Embassy and the NZRU as well as New Zealand companies like Gen-I and Run the Red,” said former St. Louis Bomber & co-organizer Sean Roy. “A lot of guests went deep into their pockets during the auction too. We couldn’t have asked for more.” Roy also noted that the support of several American clubs was critical to the event. Clubs that sponsored a US athlete’s dinner were; Kansas City Blues, Maryland Exiles, New York Athletic Club, St Louis Bombers, St Louis Druids, Santa Barbara Grunions, the Olympic Club, Sacramento State University and the University of Dayton.

New Zealand’s capital is enjoying stellar summer weather this week and dinner guests were entertained by a local band Mercury Crowe, as well as a spectacular sunset. Local real estate executive and one-time Hawaiian Harlequin Mick Robbers led a lively auction with unique appeal for sports fans.

The chance to play golf at the Olympic Club’s Lakes Course in San Francisco was snapped up, as were opening day tickets to Wrigley Field. Bidding was also brisk for the chance to join the US team pitch-side during Friday’s pool play and an exclusive visit to an All Blacks training next XVs season.

Run the Red, New Zealand’s leading mobile solutions provider, is also supplying their creative support to the USA with a mobile website this weekend. By accessing 4e7s.mobi from their phone’s browser, rugby supporters in the States can get photos and a fan’s perspective on both the dinner and the Wellington tournament.

Additionally, anyone entering their phone number to the mobile website will receive game-day summary calls from Eagles vice-captain Todd Clever on Friday and Saturday morning.

The 4eagle7s Foundation aims to establish an annual dinner as a highlight of the 7s week in Wellington and to encourage American communities in cities such as Dubai and Hong Kong to host similar events in support of the Eagles 7s team.
