2017-2018 Season

Coming off a National Championship run last season the Bombers were looking to make another appearance but this time walk away as National Champions.

The road to get there would be another tough journey and with recent changes to the Frontier League playoff rules, only two teams would move on to face each other instead of four to decide the Frontier League champion.

The Black side started off strong with two big wins against Omaha and KCRFC, finishing 4-1 in the fall with the only loss to the Royals by 3 points. The White side would go 2-2 in the fall putting up 118 point while giving up 65.

With three league losses between both sides the Bombers would have to double down in the spring to move onto playoffs and closer to a National Championship.

Again both sides started off strong in the spring with opening wins but Omaha had to forfeit the match which did give the Bombers a win but also locked the Bombers out of potential bonus points. These extra points could possibly make the difference in whether the Bombers move on into playoffs or not.

The White side would face the Hornets in the first playoff match but would fall 22-7, finishing the season 3-4. The Black side would rematch against the Royals in the mud bowl of 2018. Similar to this time last year the local area was hit with multiple rain storms and field condition were only getting worse. Much like the first match in the fall the Royals were able to put up a commanding lead but the Bombers would try and mount a comeback in the second half. Despite their best efforts the Bombers were unable to recover and suffered their only second loss of the season, ending their run back to Nationals. The Black side would finish 6-2 in league play, putting up 216 points and giving up 130.

It wasn’t the ending both sides were looking for but the boys will be back at the pitch soon enough with the 7s season starting up today. The Thursday night league in Forest Park starts on May 31st and is every other Thursday night with other tournaments throughout the summer. Practice is every Tuesday & Thursday evening at Steger Middle School in Rock Hill starting at 6:15pm. All are welcome to compete or just get a run in.

Other club news, the Bombers lost a long time member of the club John Kyle on April 13th, 2018. John had played with the Bombers for 22 years, a member of the MOPES, and you could find him at all the rugby events. John will be greatly missed.

In an early story we had talked about another Bomber player, Mike McGowan, who suffered a stroke during a practice session and his journey. Mike is out of the hospital but still has a long way to go with physical and speech therapy. Mike was able to attend the last match of the season and was great to see walking around. There is still a fundraising going on to help offset his medical bills and is still looking for any help he can get. You can find out more info here: https://www.youcaring.com/mikemcgowan-1145703
