Defense, Defense, Defense

Defense. That was the word of the day from coach Watson this past weekend as the Bombers took on Palmer in Iowa. “Strong defense will win the match,” Watson said right before kickoff, and after 83 nail-biting minutes later, he was proven right.

Pre-Game Meeting

Wet and muddy conditions prevailed throughout the match cutting out most wide play, leaving short picks and passes to dominate the match. Palmer came out of the gate strong nearly crossing the try line multiple times if not for a few unlucky breaks, but more often from the Bombers unrelenting defense. It wasn’t until late in the first half the Bombers finally capitalized on an offensive up and under kick at the 40th minute that rookie Chris “Billy-Bruce” Campbell collected and touched down under the sticks to put the Bombers up 7-0 at half after conversion.

The second half proved equally as tough as fellow rookie Corey Harmann touched down a try out wide after a long series of Bombers phases that had the boys inching their way down the field with Palmer making the boys really earn it in the 65th minute. Palmer retaliated with a try of their own and penalty that nearly leveled the game. As time wound down and the sir’s watch chimed, Palmer had possession for one last drive at halfway. This drive ended up lasting minutes and countless phases as the Bombers defense tackled and reset and tackled and reset for what seemed like an eternity. A lone runner broke the line and put Palmer right on the try line once again, but as was the case all match the men in black stepped up and held Palmer with captain Dave Klug punching the ball out in a tackle on the line to end the game.

Post Match Breakdown

Man of the Match by Palmer was given to veteran Matt Skarin, playing scrumhalf, for his intelligent play-making and ability to find the smallest holes and slip in. Bombers’ man of the match went to captain Dave Klug for leading from in front
