Calling All Bombers!

The documentary film on the history of St. Louis Bombers RFC, “Paint It Black!” is in development and we are in need of old programs, media stories, and game footage to fill in gaps. 

Therefore, we need print articles, programs, game footage, and, if possible, TV media stories (electronic/print) about our legacy. Artifacts that tell a story and would contribute to the premise of the film.  Historical Topics include: 

Evolution:1962-1988

  • The History of Rugby in St. Louis (need archives) 
  • The Founding Fathers of the Bombers and Early Conditions/Watering Holes and playing fields. (Hauff, Gladstone, Tom Jones, Schlereth, Meyer. and Himmelman)
  • From Thugby into Running Rugby. 
  • Highlights. Including big games, tours, tournaments, and championships including MRU championship over Falcons 1980.
  • Highlight Noted Teams Players, Coaches, Games, Tours (Rocky Mountains 79), Tournaments (Charlottesville, Monterey).
  • Development of administration by laws and structure (1985)

Elevation:1988-2001 

  • The modern era and the championship run including MRFU and Western Club Championships in 2001.
  • The Foreign Exchange Program (Kiwis)
  • Highlight Noted Teams, Players, Games. Coaches, Tours, Tournaments 

Excellence: 2001 – Now

  •  2006 Super League, 1999 Major League Rugby USA National Champions, Elite 8 and Sweet 16 USA Club appearances (2001 – 2016).

  • St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame
  • The New Bomber Park – The future

If you have good quality informative artifacts (especially printed articles that tell Bomber history) and/or unique photos, video, or film, please email a description of the artifact first to our Research Manager, Ty Butler: tytbutler@yahoo.com. If you wish to attach a file or document, that is also welcomed. Ty can then get back to you if we need your document. He will also tell you what type of file or format is needed or if the actual archive needs to be mailed or dropped off (e.g., game programs, printed programs, news articles, film, video).
