Regular Season Ends – Playoff Begin

The regular season has come to an end but not before both side clinched a spot on the playoff brackets. The DII side was able to secure their spot and take the conference championship a couple weeks ago against the Omaha GOATS with a win of 13-10. The DIII squad would make it to the MRFU playoffs for the second year in a row and will be facing the Hornets on Saturday, May 2nd at Forest Park, kick off is at 2pm. The winner of the match will take on the winner of the first game, Royals vs Kohlfeld on Sunday.

Before this week’s playoff the DIII side had one more game last weekend against SMRFC. It rained the entire match and forced both teams to play hard close rugby to secure the ball. At the end of the first half the Bombers lead 12-5 and the intensity began to fall. The Bombers were able to score first in the second half but SMRFC would quickly follow with their own try keeping the game close. I don’t know if it was the weather, the last SMRFC try, or the side-line cheering “Let’s GO BOMBERS” but it seemed to light a fire under the Bomber’s squad. Both the intensity and offensive pressure would push the Bombers to a 45-12 win over SMRFC. I am hoping to see the same hard work and effort this weekend as the Bomber’s try and claim the MRFU Championship.

D2 traveling – D3 Battles Ruggerfest

This year marked the 67th annual St. Louis Ruggerfest and being the two time champs the Bombers were looking for a three-peat.

Ruggerfest consisted a lot of the familiar teams from St. Louis, but were low on out of state teams because many of the teams had league matches that weekend. The Bomber’s D2 squad fell under that same category as they traveled to Kansas City to take on KCRFC.

With only a month away from playoffs teams are trying everything they can to secure a playoff spot and the D2 side needed a big win to secure theirs. The Bombers not only needed to win but also get any bonus points to move up in the standings. The Bombers were able to do both with a big win over KCRFC 50-14.

Back in St. Louis the D3 first match was a repeat of last year’s championship match against the Arkansas Griffins. Both teams have a lot of new young players but was still a very tough fought match. The Griffins took the lead in the first half 5-0 but after a few adjustments in the second half the Bombers took the lead and the win 7-5.

The Bombers would face the Royals in the second match of the day but would fall 17-40 and be placed in the 3rd place match on Sunday. Sunday’s match would be a repeat against the Griffins for 3rd place in the tournament. The Griffins took advantage of the Bombers penalties with score the majority of their points with kicks. It wasn’t looking too good for the Bombers but they were able to score a try before half to cut the lead down. The Griffins would get their own try and the Bombers were now in need of two trys to win. The Bombers kept fighting and had some huge runs that would help them take the lead late in match and win 3rd place in Ruggerfest.

Schedule

This weekend both sides have matches with the D2 traveling to Omaha and the D3 at home against the Rowdies. The D3 match will be a Forest Park with kick off at 3pm. Come on out and cheer the Bombers onto victory.

Half Way Through the 2nd Half

We are on the final stretch of the spring season and only a few weeks from the start of local and regional playoffs.

To recap, both Bomber teams won their home opener as the DIII side shut out Franklin County 42-0 and the DII reclaiming a victory against the KC Islanders 29-7.

The DII side would travel to KC to take on the DI KC Blues in a friendly match. The Bombers were first on the board but despite best efforts would fall 10-38. It was a good match to attend and would help the Bombers make adjustments on exposed areas. The DIII side also had an away match against Kohlfeld in Cape Girardeau. The score was close throughout the match with the Bombers down, but the Bombers were able to take the lead with only a few minutes left winning 18-17.

Both sides were back in St. Louis with league matches at Forest Park. The DIII side faced the Royals first but would fall 7-45 to the Royals. The DII side would face the Ramblers in the second match of the day and would defeat the Ramblers 102-0.

Schedule

This weekend also marks the 67th Annual St. Louis Gateway Ruggerfest. The event will be held at Creve Coeur Park with the first matches starting at 9am. The Bombers are reigning champs the last two years and the DIII side will be representing the Bombers as we look for a three-peat. Spring 2015

Spring is finally here and just in time to kick off the second half of the season.

The Bombers started off in early March with a couple practice matches with Lindenwood to get some of the bugs out and ready for the first match of the season.

Last weekend both sides had their first league matches at Lucier Park as the DIII side took of Franklin County and the DII side faced the KC Islanders.

The Bombers suffered losses from each team in the first half of the season and were now looking at another chance for a win.

The DIII opened up strong and with a much larger pack this spring and were able to control the game and defeated Franklin County 42-0. The Bomber’s DII side was looking to repeat what the DIII side had accomplished as they took on the Islanders in the second game of the day. Ball control and playing Bomber rugby were key as DII team beat the Islander 29-7.

Both matches were huge victories for both sides as team’s battle for position in the league standings.

Schedule

This weekend the DII side travels to Kanas City to take on the DI KC Blues in a friendly match. The DIII side will face off against Kohlfeld in Cape Girardeau for their second league match of the spring.

March 28th will be a fun weekend as the Bombers have two league matches and our Own the Bar Night that evening. The DII side is playing the Ramblers at Lucier Park and the DIII side will face the Royals at 1pm with a location TBD.

Calendar

The OTB Night will take place at Colombo’s Café & Tavern off Manchester starting at 5pm. Mardi Gras 2015

Bombers Mardi Gras Booth

Mardi Gras is this weekend and the Bombers Booth will be returning at a new location. This year the Bomber’s booth will be located next to McGurk’s Irish Pub at Russel and 12th.

Come bring your friends and stop by the booth starting at 9am to 7pm for a beer, hurricane, and other liquor drinks throughout the day.

Last year was a great time and we are looking to repeat so make sure you stop by the booth,  order a drink and talk the players. You can also find out more information about the club and the sport of rugby if you’re interested in playing.

We look forward to seeing everyone and may have giveaways but you’ve gotta stop by to find out.
