2015 Frontier Champions

The key to rugby is ball control; you control the ball, you control the game. One thing that was out of everyone’s control last weekend was Mother Nature. Field conditions were a bit on the soggy side after heavy rains and a few delays due to lightning but all games would eventually be played.

The Bomber’s first match was a repeat of last year’s playoffs taking on the Glendale Raptors in the first round. The Bomber’s knew this would be a tough battle but were determine not to repeat last year’s loss. Both teams fought hard but in the end the Bomber’s would win the first match 10-5. The Bombers would move on the second round and face either the KC Islanders or Park City Haggis for the championship.

The KC Islanders would hold off Park City 8-7 and move onto the championship round to face the Bombers.

This would be the third time this season that both teams would face off against each other. Both teams have wins against each other with the Bomber’s winning the spring match.

KC would be the first to score and hold out the Bombers 10-0 in the first half. The second half would be a complete 180 as the Bombers would not allow KC to past mid-field keeping the game deep in KC zone. The Bombers would go on and put up 20 unanswered points to take the win, the Frontier Championship, and move onto the Elite 8.

The Elite 8 will be held in San Francisco May, 30th and 31st. The Bomber’s first match will be against Life West Gladiators on Saturday. Life West is coming off a big win against Snake River to make it to the Elite 8. Saturday’s match for both teams will be a tough one.

Regular Season Ends – Playoff Begin

The regular season has come to an end but not before both side clinched a spot on the playoff brackets. The DII side was able to secure their spot and take the conference championship a couple weeks ago against the Omaha GOATS with a win of 13-10. The DIII squad would make it to the MRFU playoffs for the second year in a row and will be facing the Hornets on Saturday, May 2nd at Forest Park, kick off is at 2pm. The winner of the match will take on the winner of the first game, Royals vs Kohlfeld on Sunday.

Before this week’s playoff the DIII side had one more game last weekend against SMRFC. It rained the entire match and forced both teams to play hard close rugby to secure the ball. At the end of the first half the Bombers lead 12-5 and the intensity began to fall. The Bombers were able to score first in the second half but SMRFC would quickly follow with their own try keeping the game close. I don’t know if it was the weather, the last SMRFC try, or the side-line cheering “Let’s GO BOMBERS” but it seemed to light a fire under the Bomber’s squad. Both the intensity and offensive pressure would push the Bombers to a 45-12 win over SMRFC. I am hoping to see the same hard work and effort this weekend as the Bomber’s try and claim the MRFU Championship.

D2 traveling – D3 Battles Ruggerfest

This year marked the 67th annual St. Louis Ruggerfest and being the two time champs the Bombers were looking for a three-peat.

Ruggerfest consisted a lot of the familiar teams from St. Louis, but were low on out of state teams because many of the teams had league matches that weekend. The Bomber’s D2 squad fell under that same category as they traveled to Kansas City to take on KCRFC.

With only a month away from playoffs teams are trying everything they can to secure a playoff spot and the D2 side needed a big win to secure theirs. The Bombers not only needed to win but also get any bonus points to move up in the standings. The Bombers were able to do both with a big win over KCRFC 50-14.

Back in St. Louis the D3 first match was a repeat of last year’s championship match against the Arkansas Griffins. Both teams have a lot of new young players but was still a very tough fought match. The Griffins took the lead in the first half 5-0 but after a few adjustments in the second half the Bombers took the lead and the win 7-5.

The Bombers would face the Royals in the second match of the day but would fall 17-40 and be placed in the 3rd place match on Sunday. Sunday’s match would be a repeat against the Griffins for 3rd place in the tournament. The Griffins took advantage of the Bombers penalties with score the majority of their points with kicks. It wasn’t looking too good for the Bombers but they were able to score a try before half to cut the lead down. The Griffins would get their own try and the Bombers were now in need of two trys to win. The Bombers kept fighting and had some huge runs that would help them take the lead late in match and win 3rd place in Ruggerfest.

Schedule

This weekend both sides have matches with the D2 traveling to Omaha and the D3 at home against the Rowdies. The D3 match will be a Forest Park with kick off at 3pm. Come on out and cheer the Bombers onto victory.
